Marian Spencer: After my islet cell transplant, I'm winning against diabetes.

Marian Spencer was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at age 13. For 41 years, she carefully monitored her blood sugar levels, as well as her diet and exercise. At Baylor, Marian underwent two islet cell transplants. This experimental procedure involves transplanting islet cells from a donor pancreas into a patient?s liver, where they may begin to produce insulin. For one year, Marian was completely off insulin. She has had to resume taking insulin while she waits for a third transplant; however, the dosage is greatly reduced and she now can recognize when her blood sugar is dropping. "I will always choose Baylor because of the care I received. They know they have your life in their hands. They are just fantastic people."
