​For Patients, Families and Caregivers

Cancer education and support are an important part of the cancer treatment process. Baylor Charles A. Sammons Cancer Center at Dallas offers several programs through the Virginia R. Cvetko Patient Education Center to help you and your loved ones understand and manage the physical, emotional and spiritual challenges of cancer.

The Cvetko Center staff includes a medical director, program manager, nurse educator, chaplains, social workers, psychologist, music practitioner and trained cancer survivor volunteers. Click on any link below to learn more about cancer education and support programs offered at Baylor Dallas.

Cancer Group Meetings

The Virginia R. Cvetko Patient Education Center is pleased to offer disease-specific education programs that address the needs of individuals with specific types of cancer. Please call 214.820.2608 to register.

Unless noted otherwise, group meetings will be held in the Cvetko center, Suite 200 in the Baylor Sammons Cancer Center located at 3410 Worth Street in Dallas, Texas.

  • Amyloid Support North Texas: Second Saturday, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., Room 7, lower level, Truett Hospital (outside cafeteria).
  • Bladder/Kidney Cancer Group: Bimonthly, during Super Saturday, third Saturday of even numbered months. For more information, call 214.820.2608.
  • Breast Cancer Group: Bimonthly, during Super Saturday, third Saturday of even numbered months. For more information, call 214.820.2608.
  • Caregiver Group: Bimonthly, third Saturday every even numbered month during Super Saturday. For more information, call 214.820.2608.
  • General Cancers Group: Bimonthly, third Saturday every even numbered month during Super Saturday. Only patients diagnosed with cancer and currently in active treatment may attend this group. For more information, call 214.820.2608.
  • Graft vs. Host Disease (GVHD) Group: Bimonthly, third Saturday every even numbered month during Super Saturday. For more information, call 214.820.2608.
  • Leukemia/Lymphoma Group: Bimonthly, during Super Saturday. The third Saturday of every even numbered month. For more information, call 214.820.2608.
  • Lung Cancer Education Group: Monthly, fourth Thursday, 6-7:30 p.m., 8080 N. Central Expressway, 17th Floor.
  • North Texas Myeloma Support Group: Monthly, second Saturday, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., Baylor Sammons Cancer Center, 3410 Worth St.,10th floor conference center.
  • Oral, Head & Neck Cancer Support Group: Monthly, second Tuesday, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., Baylor Sammons Cancer Center, 3410 Worth Street,10th floor.
  • Ovarian Cancer Group: First and third Monday, 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., Cvetko Center Group room, 3410 Worth St., Suite 200.
  • Prostate Cancer Group: Quarterly, first Tuesday, 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., Baylor Sammons Cancer Center, 3410 Worth Street, 10th floor
  • Waldenström's Macroglobulinemia Group: Bimonthly, during Super Saturday. The third Saturday of even numbered months. For more information, call 214.820.2608.

Educational Programs

Other education programs are not specific to a particular type of cancer but provide education on general topics..

  • Lymphedema: Everything You Want To Know: Fourth Thursday of every month, 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., Cvetko Center group room, 3410 Worth St., Suite 200. Learn what lymphedema is, what it looks like, prevention measures and treatment.
  • Clinical Updates is a program designed to give information on a specific topic or disease.
  • Healthy Cooking Demonstrations provide tips on topics such as Summer Sweets, Gluten-Free Favorites, Vegetarian 101 and Diabetic Delights
  • Look Good . . . Feel Better is a program that helps women cope with the visible side effects of cancer treatment. Co-sponsored by the American Cancer Society. Held first Thursday in February, April, June, August, October and December.

Restore, Relax, Renew

Offering programs designed to provide tools that may reduce tension, anxiety, anger or fatigue and promote a healthy overall well-being.

  • Keep Calm & Color On!: A program that embraces the power of simple art-making techniques. Choose your creative journey - from adult coloring books to structured cards used for doodling. No art experience necessary.
  • Lanny Shaeffer Book Club: Join us for a relaxing time with new friends. Each month the book club will feature a novel of general interest to read and discuss.
  • More Than Words: Expressive Journaling: Come explore the ways words and the expressive arts come together. You will both write and use art materials to enhance the healing process. No experience necessary. 
  • Open Studio: A program designed to allow schedule flexibility as "come-and-go." Participants work alongside one another and the facilitator while engaging in and observing the creative process. All are welcome. No art experience necessary.
  • Therapeutic Music​: A free service​ for our patients that uses live music to promote healing, relaxation and stress reduction.
  • Passing the Hat: Come and learn to knit with a loom. Whether you know how to knit or not, join us and make new friends. These hats are given to patients receiving treatment for their cancer - survivor to survivor.
  • Relaxation Techniques: A Sampling and Overview: A program that explores various approaches to relaxation by focusing on breathing techniques, muscle relaxation, and guided imagery
  • Guided Imagery: An In-Depth Relaxation Experience: Short and sweet, this program is a chance to hit the reset button and set your week on a positive note. Experience a 20-minute guided meditation designed to foster deeper relaxation.
  • Yoga Classes: FREE yoga classes for cancer patients are being offered every first Friday of each month. Call the Cvetko Patient Education Center at 214.820.2608 for instructions prior to attending class.
  • Exercises classes: Classes are offered through FitSteps. For more information, call 214.820.2608.

Cancer Resource Area

To help you and your family learn about and cope with cancer, the Cvetko Center also offers a patient library on the Baylor Dallas campus:

The Deborah Leah Kielman-Rodriguez Patient Education Library is located inside the Cvetko Center, Suite 200. This dedicated library offers books written about others' cancer experiences, books to help children understand cancer, cancer medical guides and cookbooks with healthy recipes to prepare for cancer treatment, as well a selection of books for casual reading. Check-out process is easy and free of charge. There are computers available for research for survivors to use.
