The Baylor Dallas Epilepsy Program is designated as a Level IV Epilepsy Center by the National Association of Epilepsy Centers because of its advanced capabilities in diagnosing and treating the most complex forms of epilepsy.
The program’s experienced, multidisciplinary team includes a highly trained neurologist on the medical staff who is board certified in epilepsy, as well as board-certified neurologists, neurosurgeons, neuroradiologists and nuclear medicine specialists.
Advanced Care Through the Epilepsy Monitoring Unit
The Epilepsy Program’s six-bed Epilepsy Monitoring Unit offers innovative diagnostic and treatment technologies:
- High-resolution MRI, MR spectroscopy, functional MRI and PET scanning
- Non-invasive brain mapping to identify the brain area where seizures are originating
- Continuous video electroencephalography (EEG)
- ictal SPECT and intracranial electrode monitoring
- Wada testing
Complete Treatment Planning
After thorough evaluation to determine the type and severity of a patient’s epilepsy or seizure disorder, an epilepsy specialist on the medical staff may recommend medication or, in certain cases, surgery. Any medication prescribed is based on seizure type, presence of other diseases, side effects and cost.
Patients with epilepsy unable to be controlled by medication – intractable epilepsy – may qualify for surgical treatment through the Baylor Neuroscience Center.
Advances in surgical technology allow neurosurgeons to surgically treat seizures, with options ranging from minimally invasive procedures using thermal heat, to implanting neurostimulators or removing the electrical imbalance.
