The radiation oncology team works closely with your other physicians on the medical staff and healthcare providers to coordinate your care and make your treatment with us as comfortable as possible.
The goal of radiation therapy is to deliver a high enough dose of radiation into the tumor to kill cancer cells while sparing the surrounding normal tissue from damage. There are several different techniques available to achieve this aim including:
External beam radiation therapy focuses a beam of ionizing radiation on the tumor.
Intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) irradiates the tumor with a lethal dose while limiting the radiation received by the normal tissue that surrounds the tumor.
Image guided radiation therapy (IGRT) uses frequent imaging during a course of radiation therapy to improve the precision and accuracy of the delivery of the treatment.
3-D conformational radiation helps determine the configuration of a radiation beam so that it precisely conforms to the targeted tumor.
Depending on the location, size and type of your tumor or tumors, one or a combination of these techniques may be recommended. In some cases, radiation therapy is employed as a supportive measure to reduce pain, pressure or bleeding. Numerous benign tumors or growths may also be treated with radiation therapy.
The members of the radiation oncology team will work with your physicians on the medical staff and other healthcare providers in a multidisciplinary approach to provide you with comprehensive treatment.
Radiation oncologists on the medical staff participate in local hospital multidisciplinary tumor boards, and patients needing more complex treatment planning may be discussed with professionals from the different oncology specialties in order to identify a personal approach to your care.
