Rotator Cuff Surgery

Dr. Anil Koganti performs rotator cuff surgery using an arthroscope. An arthroscope is a small, tube-shaped instrument that is inserted into a joint. It consists of a system of lenses, a small video camera and a light for viewing. The camera is connected to a monitoring system that allows the doctor to view a joint through a very small incision. The arthroscope is often used in conjunction with other tools that are inserted through another incision.

Dr. Koganti specializes in arthroscopic rotator cuff repair. This procedure allows for less pain, faster recovery and significantly lower risk of surgical complications.

After surgery, Dr. Koganti will arrange for an exercise program to help you regain muscle strength, flexibility and function of your shoulder. Each patient’s recovery time is different and depends on the extent of the damage to the rotator cuff.

Normal activities can be resumed after a period of rehabilitation and strengthening has been completed. Patients should be cognizant of their shoulder and allow time for it to heal properly.

Shoulder Surgery

Dr. Anil Koganti may recommend shoulder surgery after non-surgical methods such as medication and rehab prove ineffective. Each patient case is different but, Dr. Koganti may replace just the ball (partial replacement) or both the ball and the socket (total replacement). Once the new shoulder joint is in place, Dr. Koganti will close the incision with sutures (stitches).

After the surgery is completed, most patients will experience less pain or often no pain in the diseased shoulder. Dr. Koganti may allow patients to resume some tasks gradually or avoid other tasks until the shoulder heals properly.

With appropriate rehab and strengthening, the patient will be able to return to activities they enjoy, like golf, swimming, gardening and bowling. A patient who has shoulder surgery should always remember their new shoulder is not designed for heavy impact. Patients may want to make educated choices about how to use their new shoulder.
