Minimally Invasive and Robot-Assisted Surgical Techniques
Our surgical oncology team is on the leading edge of state-of-the-art surgical techniques and complex cancer procedures. In fact, surgical oncologists at Baylor Scott & White are forerunners in developing a number of new minimally invasive techniques, including:
- Posterior retroperitoneoscopic adrenalectomy(PRA) and robot-assisted posterior retroperitoneoscopic adrenalectomy (RAPRA). These two new adrenal gland tumor procedures result in less pain and blood loss and faster recovery times for patients. We used the da Vinci® Surgical System in 2009 to perform the first reported RAPRA.
- Single incision laparoscopic surgery (SILS) through the navel. This new, minimally invasive approach is an evolution of the laparoscopic surgical technique. Many procedures can now be performed through a single incision hidden within the patient's belly button.
- In conjunction with the Baylor Scott & White Cancer Research Institute, we also participate in numerous clinical research projects, including national protocols, clinical trials and basic cancer research. This enables us to offer you the most advanced care and treatment options available.
