Before Your Surgery

We have compiled a list of best procedures to insure that your surgery goes smoothly. Below is a PDF and a video containing our list of things that you can do at home to make your recovery and return home as pleasant as possible.

Staying Overnight

At Baylor Scott & White Texas Spine & Joint Hospital, one of the focus areas of our multi-million dollar renovation was the patient rooms so that after surgery, your stay can be more comfortable than ever. After surgery, you will be taken to one of our newly renovated recovery rooms. A specially trained nurse will watch you closely until the anesthesia wears off. You may receive pain medication through the IV or by a pill as needed. You may have clear liquids and snacks when you are ready. When you are alert, your family and friends will be able to visit you in recovery. Your nurse will cover some important details.

You will remain in the post anesthesia care unit until you are awake and your heart rate, blood pressure, and breathing are normal. Outpatients may go home at this time. If you will be staying overnight, you will be taken to a well-appointed private room. Your family and friends are welcome to be with you at this time. All rooms at Baylor Scott & White Texas Spine & Joint Hospital are private and have been remodeled to provide more space for friends and family.

Financial Assistance

At Baylor Scott & White Health, we want to be a resource for you and your family. Our team of financial counselors is here to help. We encourage you to speak to a member of our team at any time – before, during or after care is received.

Hospital Pricing Information

New guidelines established by the United States Department of Health and Human Services require hospitals to place a list of their standard charges on their website. This includes the hospital’s standard charges for each diagnosis-related group (DRG).  A DRG provides a way to categorize the type of patients a hospital treats and covers all charges associated with an inpatient stay from admission to discharge.

We understand that the costs of care can be confusing.  A comprehensive list, generally referred to as the hospital’s “chargemaster,” includes the standard charges established by the hospital for individual services and supplies provided, and may be accessed below. The hospital’s average charges for each DRG also may be accessed below.  The payment amounts that hospitals receive for patient care do not necessarily reflect the prices on either the chargemaster or the hospital’s average DRG charge.

If you have private insurance and are interested in understanding what your “out-of-pocket” costs may be for care you receive at the hospital, we encourage you to contact your health insurance company because it is in the best position to help you understand your healthcare financial obligations.  For patients with Medicare or Medicaid, or patients without insurance, you may contact the hospital’s patient financial services department for estimates or additional information.

For any assistance regarding this information, please call 903-525-3300.

Outpatient Surgery

You may know Baylor Scott & White Texas Spine & Joint Hospital as the #1 hospital in Texas for spine surgery. Did you know that it’s also a great place for most outpatient surgeries including: tonsillectomies, arthroscopic repair, carpal tunnel surgery, ear tubes, eye surgery, and other outpatient procedures?

With a convenient location designed for easy parking and access and a well-trained, friendly and caring staff, Baylor Scott & White Texas Spine & Joint Hospital is the perfect choice for outpatient surgery.

What Is Outpatient Surgery?

Outpatient surgery means that a patient will have surgery and be discharged from the surgery center on the same day. And while we understand that same day surgery can be stressful for both patient and family, Baylor Scott & White Texas Spine & Joint Hospital Outpatient Surgical Services have a comprehensive system designed exclusively for meeting those needs.

When You Arrive

Upon arrival, our friendly, knowledgeable Admissions staff will assist you with checking in, insurance and payment needs and answer any questions you may have about our services. And because your privacy is very important to us, all of your personal information will be protected under HIPAA guidelines.

Family and Friends

It is very important that you have an adult family member or friend with you as you prepare for surgery and to drive you home after surgery. At Baylor Scott & White Texas Spine & Joint Hospital, we value your family and friends and have recently updated our facilities to better accommodate them at every stage of outpatient care.

Preparing For Surgery

After completing the admissions process, a member of your surgery team will escort you to the pre-operative area to prepare you for surgery. Your family or friend is welcome to be with you at this time as we collect all of your medical information and history, and answer all of your questions regarding your same day surgery.

Surgery

The operating room (OR) provides a safe and sterile place for your surgery. Prior to going to the OR you will see the Anesthesiologist and review the type of anesthesia you will receive. Our Anesthesiologists are trained to provide a personalized anesthesia regimen.

After Surgery

After surgery, you will be taken to our newly renovated recovery room, designed to accommodate more family and friends. A Registered Nurse will watch you closely until the anesthesia wears off and you are alert, at which time your family/friend will be able to visit you in recovery. Your nurse will stay by your side in order to fill you in on all of the important details before you are discharged.

Going Home

When your same day surgical team determines you are ready for discharge, they will assist you and your family through the simplified discharge process after which you will be taken to the car by wheelchair, guided by one of our caring staff members.

Follow Up

You will be receiving a follow-up call from a member of the Baylor Scott & White Texas Spine & Joint Hospital Total Healthcare Team. They will check your progress and answer any additional questions you may have.

Board certified sleep medicine physicians on the medical staff specialize in the assessment of respiratory and nonrespiratory sleep disorders. Our team includes physicians specially trained in sleep disorders and pulmonary medicine and we work closely with experts in other specialties, including cardiology, endocrinology, otolaryngology, primary care and critical care. Through observation, examination and multidisciplinary diagnosis, we are able to effectively treat sleep disorders and the conditions that cause them.

Specific Conditions

  • Obstructive sleep apnea:when a person “stops breathing” multiple times during the night. Can occur in children as well as adults
  • Narcolepsy:a disorder causing persistent sleepiness and episodes of weakness during the daytime
  • Insomnia:difficulty going to sleep or remaining asleep. A variety of medical issues may cause insomnia, including restless legs syndrome, chronic pain, poorly controlled asthma and other conditions
  • Restless leg syndrome:unusual feelings in the legs, particularly at rest and usually at night

Preparing For A Sleep Lab Study

Sleep studies are performed in a comfortable, dignified and peaceful environment. We also offer a home sleep study option for some patients.

If your physician prescribes tests in our on-site sleep lab, please follow these simple instructions:

  • Come prepared as if you are spending the night in a hotel
  • If possible, shampoo your hair on the day of your scheduled sleep study
  • If you are scheduled for a night study, have dinner before reporting to the sleep lab
  • Men can wear pajamas or shorts during the study. Women can wear pajamas or a nightgown
  • Please leave valuables and personal items at home
  • You may bring your pillow for added comfort
  • Bring any medications that you take at bedtime or in the morning
  • If you are a diabetic on insulin, bring your insulin, syringes and a snack in case of a hypoglycemic episode

Note: Alcohol and tobacco products are strictly prohibited in the sleep lab.

Getting Started With Our Care

Most sleep disorders can be treated successfully with the appropriate diagnosis and matching treatment. One or more of the following diagnostic steps may be required:

  • A physical exam with a detailed general medical history
  • Special X-rays and blood studies following the evaluation
  • A polysomnographic test to monitor several different body functions during sleep, including brainwave activity, breathing patterns, heart rhythm and blood oxygen levels

Location Details

Entry into the sleep study program may require a referral from your primary care physician. For more information or to refer a family member or friend, please call 903.594.7400.
