From providing valuable information and directions to patients, families and visitors, to lending a hand on nursing units and in waiting areas, Baylor Scott & White Waxahachie Volunteer Services program offers a wide variety of opportunities for individuals to support the hospital with their time and talents. Maybe you have only a few hours a week to volunteer, or perhaps your schedule allows you to participate a day or two a week. Regardless of the amount of time you volunteer, we value every minute you are with us to help us better serve our patients and their families.

Ambulatory Surgery Center

Must be able to spend 90% of shift walking and being physically active.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Patient/family advocacy duties include but not limited to:

  • Assisting patients and/or guests by personally greeting patients that enter the Recovery area
  • Assisting patients and/or guests by providing needed information and answering questions
    • Locate surgery patients for visitors. Do not give out any information about anyone without first checking with the nurse
  • Explain Recovery Room visitor policy
  • At the direction of the Surgery Center Nursing staff:
    • Make coffee for Family Nutrition areas
    • Round on families and visitors
    • Stock supplies in patient rooms/alcoves
    • Do clerical duties, i.e., make copies
    • Pack and maintain patient bags
    • Provide warm blankets/re-stock blanket warmer
    • Check linen storage and restock
    • Notify staff if linen cart does not have sufficient linen to complete the day's caseload

Other duties may include but not limited to:

  • Run errands
  • Assist team members as needed and requested
  • Provide comfort measures to patients:
    • Provide warm blankets

Cancer Center

Must be able to spend 90% of shift walking and being physically active.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Wipe chair rails, counters, doors, door handles and wheelchairs down
  • Disinfect phones in entire clinic
  • Disinfect waiting area (front lobby and front check in area) multiple times a shift

INFUSION:

  • Clean infusion chairs and guest chairs
  • Clean IV pumps and poles
  • Bring patients back and get them drinks , snacks, blankets and/or lunch if needed
  • Fill blanket warmer
  • Put pillowcases on pillows and make sure they are in the drawer in infusion suite
  • Check juices, crackers, etc. REFILL aif needed from stock, is low give to Jenny
  • Clean counter tops, side tables, chairs
  • Clean all monitors
  • Empty Chemo and Biohazard bins
  • Restock glove supply in suite cbinet
  • Stock water in fridge and cabinet

WAITING AREA:

  • Clean check-in counter, tables and sofas and chairs
  • Check coffee station, fill needed items
  • Check water bottle /cups replace if empty

EXAM ROOMS:

  • Clean chairs after each patient
  • Check supplies under cabinets
  • Check all sani-cloth wipes, replace if needed
  • DRESSING ROOMS:
  • Restock gowns in appropriate places in dressing rooms
  • Fold gowns for warmer in Ladies dressing room
  • Keep water bottles stocked
  • Disinfect changing rooms

CHECK LINEN CLOSET:

  • Call Jenean in EVS 41-4152 if a new cart needed
  • Fill all blanket warmers

Day Surgery

  • Assisting patients and/or guests by providing needed information and answering questions

    • Round on families and visitors
    • Stock supplies in patient rooms/alcoves
    • Supplies Stock in nutrition room
    • Do clerical duties, i.e., make copies
    • Pack and maintain patient bags
    • Provide warm blankets/re-stock blanket warmer
    • Check linen storage and restock
    • Notify staff if linen cart does not have sufficient linen to complete the day's caseload

Other duties may include but not limited to:

  • Run errands
  • Assist Day Surgery Techs as needed and requested
  • Provide comfort measures to patients:
    • Provide warm blankets
    • Provide Patient's family/guests with information about Nutrition center

Emergency Department

Must be able to spend 100% of shift walking and being physically active.

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Escort or transport of low-risk patients to Triage area, ED treatment rooms
  • Provide ice packs to patients
  • Distribute face masks to patients and visitors
  • Provide information to patients, families, or visitors
  • Give information about parking procedures
  • Give directions about locations of various hospital departments or areas
  • Locate ED patients for visitors
  • Check with a Triage nurse or Charge nurse before giving any information about a patient to anyone
  • Ask visitors to wear visitor badge/sticker
  • Assist ED team by explaining delays to patients awaiting treatment
  • Provide comfort measures to waiting patients in waiting room/treatment areas
  • Provide diversion for patients and children
  • Keep the waiting area neat and tidy
  • Pick up magazines or large articles of trash
  • Notify housekeeping about liquid spills or major clean ups. Do not try to clean up blood or any body fluids and do not touch any sharp instruments

PREPARE ROOMS FOR NEW PATIENTS:

  • Put on gloves before changing sheets on the stretchers or cleaning up trash
  • Ensure a pillow is on every stretcher

STOCKING ROOMS (PLEASE BE SURE EACH ROOM HAS FOLLOWING):

  • Urinals
  • Specimen cups
  • Bio- Hazard Bags
  • Alkaline wipes for specimen collection
  • Tissues
  • Patient belongings bags

CHECK BREAK ROOM:

  • Ice bags
  • Cups
  • Wipe counter tops

Gift Shop

Must be able to spend 60% of shift walking and being physically active.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

    Maintain an inviting and customer friendly atmosphere by:

    • Greeting customers
    • Processing customer transactions
    • Taking floral delivery orders and delivering flowers to patient rooms
    • Opening and/or closing the Gift shop
    • Being acquainted with merchandise and replenishing on an as need basis
    • Maintain a clean, safe, and inviting atmosphere for our customers
    • Basic computer skills recommended
    • Stocking supplies
    • General cleaning/straightening

    • Greet and direct guests as they enter the lobby
    • Escort patients and family to specified areas of hospital as directed by front desk
    • Escort guests to Employee Health office on 2nd floor
    • Wheelchair assistance and sanitize after each use
    • Keep the lobby neat and tidy
    • Any day-to-day duties that may be needed to support the team, guests and facility

    Guest Services - Surgery Lounge Waiting Area

    Must be able to spend 80% of shift walking and being physically active.

    RESPONSIBILITIES:

    Patient/family advocacy duties include but not limited to:

    • Be familiar with the layout of the hospital
    • Answer phones
    • Be liaison between Day Surgery/Recovery/Front Desk Volunteer and patients' families
    • Introduce yourself to visitors in waiting area and provide the comfort needed
    • You are there to answer questions and keep them informed
    • Familiarity with Patient Surgical Tracking Board
    • Wheelchair assistance
    • Keep Surgery Lounge area tidy
    • Accompany family members to Recovery and Consultation
    • Any day to day duties that may be needed to support the Baylor team and or visitors of our hospital
    • Locate surgery patients for visitors. Do not give out any other information about a patient to anyone without first checking with the nurse
    • Make coffee for Surgery Lounge Waiting room

    GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • Assist with ensuring patient and their families are provided a comfortable and healing experience during their visit. This may include:
      • Provide information to patients, families, or visitors
      • Give information about parking procedures and resources
      • Give directions about locations of various hospital departments or areas
      • Check with appropriate team members from procedural areas before giving any information about a patient to anyone
      • Ask visitors to wear visitor badge/sticker
      • Provide comfort measures to waiting patients in waiting room/treatment areas
      • Provide diversion for patients and children
      • Keep the waiting area neat and tidy
      • Pick up magazines or large articles of trash
      • Notify housekeeping about liquid spills or major clean ups. Do not try to clean up blood or any body fluids and do not touch any sharp instruments
    • Interact and engage with patients and guests in a positive and respectful manner
    • Maintain confidentiality of sensitive information pertaining to the organization, its clients, and stakeholders
    • Report any concerns, incidents, or issues to the volunteer coordinator or appropriate team members

    • Assisting patients and/or guests by providing needed information and answering questions
    • Do not give out any other information about a patient to anyone without first checking with the nurse
    • Explain ICU direct access visitor policy
    • Ensure cleanliness of all interior and exterior public areas and restrooms by providing light clean up or calling for service
    • Make coffee for ICU waiting area and ICU Lobby area
    • At the direction of the ICU Nursing staff:
      • Provide ice and water to patients
      • Check copiers and printers for paper
      • Stock and re-order supplies in nutrition room
      • Listen for tube delivery
    • Answer the telephone and direct calls as needed
    • Provide comfort measures to patients:
      • Provide warm blankets/re-stock blanket warmer

    • Liaison between patient and department/supervisor
    • Wheelchair assistance - seat and push to location of service
    • Ensure cleanliness of all interior and exterior public areas and restrooms by providing light clean up or calling for service
    • Replenish supplies as needed
    • Escort patients from elevator and outpatient lab area

    Other duties may include but not limited to:

    • Run errands
    • Waiting Room rounding
    • Refresh & straighten magazines

    Pet Therapy

    • Assist pet therapy owner and dog
    • Assist patients and/or guests by providing needed information and answering questions:
      • Greet and introduce yourself, owner and dog
      • Explain pet therapy to patients and room visitors
      • Provide hand sanitizer to patient and visitors prior to and after interaction with the dog
      • Round with owner and dog throughout facility

    Popcorn Machine

    Must be able to spend 90% of shift walking and being physically active.

    RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • Set up popcorn machine for popping with supplies and cart
    • Pop popcorn following procedures outlined during on-hands training and follow all safety rules
    • Greet customers and visitors to the hospital with a smile and a cheerful attitude
    • Maintain sanitary food handling procedures while packaging and selling popcorn (use gloves and frequently sanitize hands)
    • No eating at the popcorn machine
    • Drinking is permitted, but discretely
    • At the end of work hours, follow clean up procedures
    • Return all supplies and cart to the Volunteer Services room
    • All monies are to be secured in the safe and safe locked
    • Restock popcorn cart with supplies

    Thrift Store

    RESPONSIBILITIES:

    Preparing back of store for store opening:

    • Working with a group of individuals processing the donations received
    • Sorting, hanging clothing and evaluating all items to ensure they meet the standard of the store
    • Maintain various departments of the store
    • Being familiar with merchandise, restocking on an as needed basis
    • If possible, lifting/carrying donations to the front of the store, carrying tubs of merchandise to sheds for storage

    Front of the store during store hours:

    • Greeting customers/enjoy working with the public
    • Using an on-line system to check out customers, and handling money
    • Accepting donations and placing in appropriate areas
    • Opening and closing the store

    • Ensure cleanliness of all interior and exterior public areas and restrooms by providing light clean up or calling for service

    Other duties may include but not limited to:

    • Making copies - stuff envelopes with letters from department to patients and physicians
    • Assist patients with paperwork
    • Run errands
    • Waiting Room rounding
    • Refresh & straighten magazines

    Women and Children's Services

    MORNING RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • Make coffee and set up coffee bar for Guest Lounge if needed
    • Make sure Guest Lounge is clean and orderly (all trash thrown away, magazines organized, etc.)
    • Ask postpartum patients if they need linens, pads, etc., while in the room
    • Set up empty postpartum rooms for the next admission
    • Work with the secretary to put together packets if needed
    • Add linens to blanket warmers in both supply rooms
    • Ask if any assistance is needed in NICU

    AFTERNOON RESPONSIBILITIES:

    Quiet time is between 2:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m., no room interaction to allow patients to rest

    • Take bags of ice water to all postpartum rooms (patient rooms 301-311) to fill up their Baylor jugs.
    • Ask postpartum patients if they need linens , pads, etc., while in room
    • Make an afternoon batch of coffee for the coffee bar in the Guest Lounge for visitors, clean up and organize coffee if needed
    • Work with the secretary to put packets together if needed
    • Add linens to blanket warmers in supply rooms
    • Ask if any assistance is needed in NICU
