Wound Assessment and Treatment

Each patient’s wound needs unique care and attention. The Wound Care Center is able to offer quality, specialized care. We provide a personalized treatment plan to minimize pain and discomfort and expedite healing.

Acute wounds are sudden, severe and short-term and can be caused by:

  • Abrasions, minor lacerations
  • Blunt trauma
  • Burns
  • Cellulitis
  • Crush injuries
  • Puncture wounds
  • Spider, insect, animal bites
  • Skin lesions
  • Surgical site infection
  • Surgical incision separation

Chronic wounds are ongoing, last longer than three months or come back regularly and can be caused by:

  • Infections
  • Diabetic foot ulcers
  • Fistula draining
  • Lymphedema
  • Post-surgical non-healing
  • Gangrene
  • Ostomy complications
  • Sickle cell anemia
  • Skin breakdown from incontinence, radiation treatment

Wound Assessment

An evaluation includes a physical examination of the wound and assessment of other factors that may affect healing. A comprehensive wound evaluation includes assessment of infection, nutritional status and vascular supply. We also evaluate the patient’s understanding of and ability to care for their wounds and help arrange home care.

Treatment Options

Based on the assessment, the team provides treatment, or combination of treatments, designed to achieve improved results. Several options and intervention techniques are available:

  • Care of complicated wounds associated with arterial insufficiency, diabetic neuropathy, venous disease and collagen vascular disease
  • Bioengineered skin grafting
  • Incision, drainage of abscesses
  • Wound debridement
  • Treatment of burns, infected wounds and non-healing surgical wounds
  • Management of venous stasis ulcers​​
