What is Barrett’s esophagus?
Barrett's esophagus causes changes to the lining of the esophagus near the stomach. The changes may have been caused by the acid reflux that occurs with GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease).
The changed lining is not cancerous, but Barrett's esophagus may increase your chances of developing cancer later on.
Barrett's esophagus treatment
Currently, there is no cure for Barrett's esophagus, so treatment is aimed at preventing further damage from occurring by stopping acid reflux from the stomach.
Treatment plans for patients will be determined by their care team based on age, medical history, type and stage of Barrett's esophagus and personal preferences. Barrett's esophagus treatment options may include:
- Medicine
- H2 receptor antagonists and proton pump inhibitors
- Porfimer sodium solution
- Surgery: fundoplication
- Dilation procedure
- Clinical trials (when appropriate)
