Biography

Dr. Huang is a Chinese-born American neurosurgeon and Chairman of the Department of Neurosurgery at Baylor Scott & White Medical Center - Temple. He received his medical degree from Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. Dr. Huang is known for his clinical and research work in nervous system injury and repair, including traumatic brain injury, spinal trauma and peripheral nerve injuries. He also is the Director of the Neuroscience Institute and holds the Plummer Endowed Chair in Neuroscience. His main research interest lies in the field of nervous system injury and repair. His lab has active extramural research funding including a prestigious R01 award from the National Institutes of Health. Dr. Huang has a general neurosurgery practice and performs surgeries for complex spinal disorders, brain tumors, and peripheral nerve disorders, and he also treats patients with traumatic brain injuries, spinal cord injuries and cerebrovascular diseases. He is author or co-author of 150 peer-reviewed articles, editorial reviews and book chapters, and he holds six U.S. patents. Dr. Huang has served as an invited reviewer at several NIH Study Sections, at the Department of Defense and the Department of Veteran Affairs Research Grants. Dr. Huang also was an Army Reserve neurosurgeon and was deployed to Balad Theater Hospital in Iraq in 2008 in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. He received an Army Commendation Medal for his exceptional efforts treating over 1,200 injured U.S. soldiers with brain and spinal trauma. He was honorably discharged from the US Army at rank of Lieutenant Colonel.
