Dr Melvin Simien is a dual board-certified gastroenterologist and Internal Medicine physician as well as an advanced therapeutic endoscopist who believes in utilizing his unique skillset to optimize his patient’s health and well-being.
After graduating from LSU Medical School in Louisiana, Dr. Simien completed his internal medicine residency at Methodist Hospital in Dallas, TX. During residency he became fascinated with the digestive system and therapeutic interventions. He completed his GI fellowship at UTMB in Galveston, TX and continued on for a sub fellowship in advanced therapeutic endoscopy under the mentorship of world-renowned experts at GI Associates in Milwaukee, WI. Dr. Simien has presented research at national conferences, published peer-reviewed articles in academic journals, authored questions for a review book and proctored for a hands on course sponsored by American College of Gastroenterologists. Currently he continues to attend and participate in national conferences as well as hands on workshops.
Dr. Simien believes in putting the patient first while providing them with the information necessary to make the best decision. His interests include Barrett’s esophagus, inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, liver pathology, disorders of the bile duct, large polyps, GI cancers, pancreatic cysts, pancreatitis, pseudocyst drainage, pancreatic necrosectomies, and Celiac disease. Endoscopically he is interested in non-surgical bariatric endoscopy, all aspects of interventional endoscopy including enteroscopy, ERCP, endoscopic ultrasound (EUS), fine needle aspiration (FNA), endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR), BARRX radiofrequency ablation (RFA), cricopharyngeal myotomy, Zenker’s diverticulum, peroral endoscopic myotomy (POEM), and endoscopic mucosal dissection (ESD.) Most importantly he enjoys thinking outside of the box for difficult cases.
