Biography

Dr. Shaffer brings decades of clinical, academic, and leadership experience to Johnson City and surrounding Hill Country communities. His medical journey began as a Registered Nurse, earning his diploma from St. Vincent Medical Center School of Nursing in Toledo, Ohio. He continued his education with a BA in Biology at the University of Texas at El Paso. Driven by a passion for patient-centered care, he graduated from the Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine at Midwestern University, earning his Doctor of Osteopathy degree in 2001. He then completed his residency in Family Medicine at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center and pursued fellowship training in Primary Care Sports Medicine at East Carolina University, where he also participated in faculty development.


Board certified by the American Board of Family Medicine since 2004 and holding a Certificate of Added Qualification in Primary Care Sports Medicine, Dr. Shaffer has been recognized for his commitment to excellence with numerous honors, including the “Excellence in Patient Care – Clinical Faculty Award,” “Resident of the Year,” and multiple “Best Doctors” distinctions in Ohio and Texas. Throughout his career, Dr. Shaffer has held a variety of academic appointments, including Associate Professor roles at the University of North Texas Health Sciences Center and Cincinnati Children’s Hospital, as well as leadership positions such as Director of Sports Medicine Fellowship programs and faculty committees. His expertise has contributed to the education of future healthcare professionals and advanced the field of sports medicine. A leader in both medicine and athletics, Dr. Shaffer has served as team physician for collegiate programs at East Carolina University, Texas Tech University, University of North Texas, University of Cincinnati, and most recently, Schreiner University. He has also been involved with high school and youth sports teams, marathon events, and athletic championships, providing medical care and guidance to athletes at every level.

Dr. Shaffer’s leadership extends to committee work, including chairing Conference USA medical advisory groups and directing medical coverage for major athletic tournaments. Fluent in conversational and medical Spanish, Dr. Shaffer is committed to serving diverse populations. He is an active member of professional organizations such as the American Academy of Family Physicians, American Medical Society for Sports Medicine, and American College of Sports Medicine. Community engagement is a cornerstone of his practice, as evidenced by his involvement in pre-participation physicals, volunteer medical service at national and international sporting events, and presentations at major medical conferences. Outside of medicine, Dr. Shaffer is married with three children and values family life alongside his professional pursuits. His dedication to patient care, athlete health, medical education, and community service makes him a trusted provider and respected leader in the field of primary care and sports medicine.
