Locations of Joel Wells, MD, MPH, FAAOS

Dr. Wells is a fellowship-trained comprehensive hip surgeon. He specializes in periacetabular osteotomy, arthroscopic and open hip preservation surgery, hip sports surgery, anterior total hip replacement, hip resurfacing, and hip ... reconstruction. He has a particular interest in hip dysplasia, femoroacetabular impingement syndrome, Perthes, complex hip deformities and hip research. Dr. Wells is also the medical director of the Comprehensive Hip Center Program at Baylor Scott & White Medical Center — McKinney.

Dr. Wells grew up in Abilene, TX, attending Abilene Cooper High School, where he was valedictorian. He then continued his education at Abilene Christian University, where he was a four-year baseball letterman and was drafted by the New York Mets. Choosing medicine over baseball, he knows he made the right choice. He goes to sleep each night contemplating the patients he treated that day and wakes up ready to meet the new ones. He can often be found at his desk handwriting thank-you notes and does not hesitate to make the occasional house call. Dr. Wells says he has the best job in the world.

Dr. Wells was recognized by D Magazine as a Best Doctor for 2020, 2021,  2022 and 2023.

Insurances accepted

Baylor Scott & White has established agreements with several types of insurance to ensure your health needs are covered.

Insurance listings are subject to change without prior notice. Please call your physician's office or your health or insurance plan to verify coverage information prior to scheduling your visit or procedure. Not all members participating in contracted networks have "in network" access. In network participation may change from time to time without prior notice. Independent providers (which could include, for example only, anesthesiologists, radiologists, pathologists, emergency medicine physicians, advance practice professionals, and other independent providers of health care services) may deliver part of your care, and such providers may be considered out-of-network on your health and insurance plans even if the Facility may be considered in network. If you desire additional information as to the providers who may be involved in providing your care, you can either ask your treating provider (who may know some of the specialists or groups who could be involved) or you can request a list of Facility-based physician groups by calling the following toll free number: (877) 810-0372. This list is updated annually and is subject to change without prior notice
