High Cholesterol

About high cholesterol

Cholesterol is a fatty substance that builds up in your bloodstream. When blood cholesterol is high, it forms plaque, which can build up in the walls of arteries.

Over time, this can lead to coronary artery disease, heart attack or stroke.

High cholesterol treatment

If your cholesterol levels are higher than normal, talk with your physician on the medical staff about steps you can take to lower your levels. Steps may include lifestyle changes like diet, physical activity, quitting smoking and medication.

Treatment plans for patients will be determined by their care team based on age, medical history, type and stage of high cholesterol and personal preferences. Options may include:

  • Lifestyle changes – eat heart-healthy foods, maintain a healthy weight, exercise, stop smoking, limit alcohol and control stress
  • Medication
