With advances in technology and surgical procedures, you now have even more options for joint replacement. In addition to traditional approaches, Baylor Scott & White also offers several specialized procedures that help lessen recovery time.
Anterior Hip Replacement
For many people suffering from arthritis, hip pain, stiffness and/or limited hip movement, the only option for relief is a total hip replacement done the conventional way. However, many Baylor Scott & White facilities offer anterior hip replacement, a proven, minimally invasive technique that usually minimizes pain and the time from surgery to recovery.
Anterior hip replacement offers many potential benefits:
- It allows the surgeon to get to the hip joint from the front of the hip rather than having to cut and then reattach muscles around the hip as in the conventional approach.
- In the anterior approach, an orthopedic surgeon reaches the hip by working through natural openings between muscles. By not having to cut the muscles, there is usually decreased pain and healing time.
- With a conventional approach, typically there are strict precautions for hip movement, which can slow down recovery. With the anterior approach, patients are allowed to bend their hip freely post-operatively and can bear full weight as soon as comfortable. This usually results in a more rapid return to normal function.

Joint revision surgery can help relieve pain and restore function in joints that have undergone a previous procedure. It's not unusual for artificial hip, shoulder, elbow and knee joints to require revision. Even when the initial outcome of the original replacement procedure is good, the need for revision can arise for a variety of reasons, including:
- Normal wear of an artificial joint. Most prostheses have a life of 10 to 20 years. As time passes, an artificial joint may fit less securely and lose effectiveness or break.
- Pain. Any pain or discomfort that persists after recovery from a joint procedure may indicate one or more problems and could be a reason to consider revision.
- Infection of surrounding tissue. Infection can cause weakness or damage to the joint.
- Structural defects. Debris from components of an artificial joint can cause problems.
- Musculoskeletal tumors. This serious condition in the joint or surrounding soft tissue can lead to functional impairment.

Baylor University Medical Center at Dallas, Baylor Scott & White All Saints Medical Center – Fort Worth, Baylor Scott & White Medical Center – Grapevine, Baylor Scott & White Medical Center – Plano and Baylor Scott & White Medical Center – Waxahachie offer one-day joint replacement discharge for eligible patients undergoing total hip or total knee replacement surgery. This innovative approach means patients can have surgery one morning and go home the following day.
Thanks to advances in pain management during hip or knee joint replacement procedures at select Baylor Scott & White facilities, rehabilitation is now able to begin within hours after surgery with minimal discomfort. This is because patients typically do not need the types of pain medications that may have more side effects.
After additional therapy the day after surgery, patients can usually discharge home that afternoon. Previously, joint replacement patients typically would be in the hospital for three to four days or longer.
Candidates for One-Day Joint Replacement Discharge
Many patients qualify for one-day joint replacement discharge, including those who:
- Are overall in good health
- Have a healthy body mass
- Have a support person to help at home
- Take a pre-operative training class and review educational materials
- Have discussed one-day joint replacement discharge with their surgeon
