A hernia happens when an organ or fatty tissue pushes through a weak spot in the muscle or connective tissue that holds it in place. Most hernias occur in the abdomen, and common contents of a hernia include fatty tissue or part of the intestine. Hernias often develop over time due to aging, previous surgery or strain, but some people are born with areas of weakness that make hernias more likely.
Hernias don’t always cause symptoms right away, but they can worsen over time. While hernias do not go away on their own, the good news is that they are common and treatable, typically requiring surgery to repair.
