To help manage symptoms at home, try these tips.

• Dietary changes: Eating small, frequent meals when you can and choosing bland foods, such as crackers, rice and potatoes, may reduce nausea and vomiting.
• Drink plenty of fluids: You should also drink fluids at times of the day when you feel better. Seltzer and ginger ale might help, while fruits and vegetables can be easier to tolerate if you blend them in smoothies. Try to drink 6 to 8 cups of non-caffeinated fluids every day.
• Avoid triggers: Avoid food, smells or movements, such as traveling in a car that may worsen your nausea.

There are integrative medicine options that may help alleviate symptoms, including:

• Acupressure: To reduce nausea, press the pressure point located in the middle of your inner wrist, three finger-widths from the wrist crease, between the two tendons. Apply firm pressure to one wrist at a time for three minutes. Some women find that wearing acupressure wristbands can reduce symptoms.
• Acupuncture: Some studies show that acupuncture can help manage nausea and vomiting in pregnancy.
• Aromatherapy: Though research is limited, certain scents, often from essential oils, may help some people manage the symptoms of HG.
• Ginger supplements: Many people find that ginger supplements or tea help with nausea and vomiting. Always ask your doctor before taking supplements during pregnancy, as they are not suitable for everyone.

Several prescription medications can relieve nausea and vomiting. If your symptoms continue, your doctor might recommend a combination of vitamin B6, also known as pyridoxine, and doxylamine. Doxylamine is an over-the-counter medication that is safe during pregnancy.

Your doctor might prescribe other antiemetic drugs to prevent vomiting, antihistamines or other medications to control symptoms. The medications can come in the form of patches or creams or can be given intravenously if you cannot take pills.

If your vomiting is excessive and you become severely dehydrated, you might be admitted to the hospital.

Treatments for moderate to severe hyperemesis gravidarum include:

• Intravenous fluids: Delivered via an IV to provide fluids and nutrients, often requiring hospitalization.
• Tube feeding: Nutrients are given through a tube inserted into your nose or stomach, typically requiring hospitalization.
• Total parenteral nutrition (TPN): For the most severe cases, nutrients are delivered through an IV that bypasses the digestive system, allowing it to rest and heal.
