Central Texas Hero Spotlight: Stephen Harrell

Image of Central Texas Hero SpotlightThe story of Stephen Harrell and his journey as a blood donor is one for the record books. Originally from Jacksonville, FL, Stephen first began donating blood while he was in the U.S. Army. Having O negative blood is extremely important when serving in the military since O negative blood is often used in times of emergencies, when the blood type of an individual is not known. Stephen knew the importance of his donations while in the military and his goal was to help save the lives of his friends.

Now retired, Stephen has a new goal in mind—Donate blood in all 50 states. His vision to travel the country to donate started with his grandson. Stephen said, “My grandson had a blood drive at his school and he inspired me to travel the country to donate blood in all 50 states.” Now two and a half years in, Stephen has donated blood in 14 states and continues his journey across the U.S. Stephen will become the first person to ever donate blood in all 50 states, but to him, it’s more about the chance to travel the country and make an impact in someone’s life.
