3-D Mammography – Designed To Increase Detection and Decrease False Alarms
3-D mammography, offered at Baylor Scott & White Emergency Center – Lovers Lane, an outpatient department of Baylor University Medical Center, provides more clarity and greater accuracy when screening for breast abnormalities when compared to 2-D mammography.
Unlike traditional mammography, which obtains just a single image, 3-D mammography creates multiple breast images in just seconds, allowing the radiologist to examine breast tissue one layer at a time. During your exam, the X-ray arm sweeps in a slight arc over the breast, taking multiple breast images in just seconds. A computer then produces a 3-D image of your breast tissue in one millimeter layers, giving a more accurate reading. 3-D mammography is especially helpful to women with dense breast tissue because it provides a clearer picture.
According to studies reported by
The Journal of the American Medical Association, 3-D mammography has shown to decrease the number of false-positive results as well as the need for recall testing, both of which alleviate the stress involved in breast cancer screening.
The Benefits of 3-D Mammography
- An increase in cancer detection rate
- Decrease in false alarms due to abnormalities
- Reduction of additional testing
- Fine details are more visible and are less likely to be hidden by overlapping tissue
- Fewer repeat images, reducing the exposure to radiation
- Improved breast cancer detection by 27-50 percent over 2-D mammography
Breast Fellowship-Trained Radiologist Specializing in Breast Imaging
All mammogram studies are interpreted by a board-certified and breast fellowship-trained radiologist who specializes in breast imaging.
A written order from a doctor is not required for traditional 2-D or 3-D screening mammograms. Mammograms are typically covered by insurance; however, please check with your insurance provider for exact 3-D coverage details.
Schedule Your Screening Mammogram
We know you are busy, but a mammogram is a picture worth taking. In fact, most screenings take 30 minutes or less.
