What is transcatheter aortic valve replacement?

Transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR), also called transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI), is a procedure to replace a narrowed aortic valve that isn’t opening properly. The aortic valve controls blood flow from the heart to the body, and when it narrows (aortic stenosis), it can block or slow the flow.

TAVR is a minimally invasive procedure, meaning it uses smaller cuts compared to traditional open-heart surgery. It's often recommended for people who can’t have regular heart surgery. TAVR can help relieve symptoms like chest pain, shortness of breath and fatigue caused by the valve problem.

Why might I need TAVR?

You may need replacement of your aortic valve if you have progressive heart failure due to aortic valve stenosis. TAVR is a less invasive option compared to traditional open-heart surgery, often leading to a shorter hospital stay.

Your doctor may recommend TAVR if:

You have severe aortic stenosis with symptoms like chest pain or shortness of breath
Your biological aortic valve isn't functioning well
You have other health issues, like lung or kidney disease, that make open-heart surgery too risky

How do I prepare for TAVR surgery?

Before your TAVR procedure, you will need some tests to help your doctor understand how blood flows in your heart and check for any potential issues. These tests may include:

Blood tests
Echocardiogram
Electrocardiogram (EKG)
CT scan or heart MRI scan
Cardiac catheterization to check for artery blockages

After the tests, your doctor will explain what to expect during the procedure and after, including the type of anesthesia you will receive. They’ll also answer any questions you have.

You’ll need to stop eating and drinking for 4 to 6 hours before the procedure. Your doctor will let you know if you need to stop taking any medications before the procedure.

TAVR risks

Infection
