Disability

Should you get sick, injured or welcome a new child to your family, our disability insurance provides a portion of your income while you are away from work.

See below for 2024 details.

Overview

We offer three types of disability insurance:

  • Short-term disability (STD)—you are automatically enrolled* at 60% coverage level or can choose 70% buy-up coverage, costs correspond to your coverage level
  • Basic long-term disability (LTD)—you are automatically enrolled, no cost to you
  • Supplemental LTD—you can choose buy-up coverage

*You may chose to opt-out of coverage. If you opt-out during your initial eligibility window, you will be subject to the pre-existing conditions should you enroll in the future. See below for details.

"A few years ago, I learned I had a major heart condition during a routine appointment. After surgery to repair it, I doubled down on a heart-healthy lifestyle—eating a balanced diet, paying attention to my medication, getting regular exercise, attending health webinars and managing my stress through music."

Short-term Disability (STD)

STD pays a portion of your salary for up to 180 days if you can’t work because of a qualified illness, injury or become the parent of a new child.

How It Works

  • You are automatically enrolled at 60% coverage when you become eligible for benefits, or can chose 70% buy-up coverage. Plans come at a cost that correspond to your coverage level.
  • You can opt out during your enrollment window, but if you do, you might not be covered for certain pre-existing conditions if you enroll at a later time (see below).
  • Your STD premiums are deducted from your paycheck every pay period, before taxes.
In the event you need a Leave of Absence—such as maternity, parental or adoption benefits— it is important to understand that how your leave is administered is different than how you are paid on leave. Using available paid time off (PTO) and/or short-term disability are the only ways to receive income replacement while on a leave of absence. There are various leaves of absence available to you, depending on your situation. View LOA page for details.

Note: Occupational illnesses or injuries are covered under Safe Choice, not STD. Call Safe Choice at 877.415.0005 or go to the Safe Choice Page (log-in required).

Actively at work provision: If you request to elect or increase you or your dependents’ coverage and are not actively at work at the start of the plan year, your coverage changes will not take effect until the date you return to work.

STD Premiums

Your STD premiums are deducted from your paycheck every pay period, before taxes. Rate calculations are available in the PeoplePlace enrollment system.

Pre-existing Conditions*

If you've been diagnosed, treated or received medical advice for a condition within three months of your effective date on the plan, your condition may be excluded for coverage under STD, as detailed below.

  • If you enroll as a new hire or because you are newly eligible for benefits:
The pre-existing condition provision does not apply.

  • If you enroll outside of annual enrollment due to a qualifying life event:
Conditions from the 3 months prior to your effective date would be excluded from coverage for a period of 12 months.

  • If you enroll during annual enrollment:
Any conditions from October to December (prior to the plan’s effective date of January 1) would be excluded from coverage for a period of 12 months. This includes pregnancy.

*Applicable if enrollment occurs outside of initial eligibility

Long-term Disability (LTD)

Basic LTD may pick up where STD leaves off. It pays 50% of your salary, up to $15,000* a month, starting on the 181st day of disability. Basic LTD is provided to you at no cost, and you are automatically enrolled.

*Other coverage levels are available for certain executive and physician roles and are visible in the PeoplePlace enrollment system.

How It Works

  • BSW provides basic LTD at no cost to you. You can also buy supplemental coverage (see below).
  • LTD benefits continue for as long as you are disabled (must meet certain criteria) or until you reach normal Social Security retirement age.

Certain pre-existing conditions limits might apply.

Supplemental Long-term Disability (LTD)

This optional coverage increases your basic LTD benefit to 60% of your salary, up to $15,000* a month.

*Other coverage levels are available for certain executive and physician roles and are visible in the PeoplePlace enrollment system.

How It Works

  • LTD premiums are paid through after-tax payroll deductions.
  • Enrollment is optional (supplemental LTD coverage is not automatic).
  • Like basic LTD, supplemental LTD may begin on the 181st day of disability.
  • Certain pre-existing condition limits might apply.

Actively at work provision: If you request to elect or increase you or your dependents’ coverage and are not actively at work at the start of the plan year, your coverage changes will not take effect until the date you return to work.

Supplemental LTD Premiums

Your Supplemental LTD premiums are deducted from your paycheck every pay period, after taxes. Rate calculations are available in the PeoplePlace enrollment system.
