Types of leave

As a Baylor Scott & White team member, you may be eligible to take a leave of absence for many reasons. We also offer programs that may provide income while you're away.

The basics

When planning a leave of absence, consider:

  • What type of leave am I eligible for?
  • Will my time away be paid or unpaid?

It's important to understand that how your leave is administered is different from how you're paid while on leave. Available benefit and time-off programs are the only way to receive income replacement during a leave of absence.

Several types of leave may be available, depending on your situation.

Short-term leave (STL)

Automatically enrolled, but you can opt out.

When you become benefits-eligible, you'll automatically be enrolled in short-term leave (STL) coverage, which provides 60% income replacement if you're unable to work due to a qualifying disability. You may have the option to increase your benefit to 70% income replacement during enrollment.

To receive parental leave benefits, you must be enrolled in STL coverage before your child's birth or placement.

  • Up to four weeks of paid parental leave
  • 100% income replacement
  • Available to all parents, regardless of how your family grows
  • Can be used during the first 12 months following a birth or adoption

Important

  • If you enroll in STL coverage when you're first eligible, no preexisting condition limitations apply.
  • If you waive STL when first eligible and enroll at a later date, any condition (including pregnancy) for which you receive treatment, diagnosis, care, or consultation within the first three months of coverage will not be covered for the first 12 months of your STL coverage.
  • If you request to elect or increase your coverage and are not actively at work, your coverage changes won’t take effect until the date you return to work.

Your STL premiums are deducted from your paycheck on a post-tax basis each pay period.

Short-term leave resources

Long-term disability (LTD)

Financial protection for extended disabilities

Long-term disability (LTD) coverage can help ease financial worries by providing ongoing income protection if you're unable to work for more than 180 days because of a qualifying disability.

  • BSW provides 50% LTD coverage at no cost
  • You may have the option to increase your benefit to 60% income replacement during enrollment.
  • Benefits may continue as long as you remain disabled and meet plan requirements, or until you reach normal Social Security retirement age.

Your LTD premiums are deducted from your paycheck on a post-tax basis each pay period.
